Hair Transplantation at Park-Klinik Birkenwerder/Berlin
The hair transplantation technique was developed 35 years ago. It has been improved in recent years and this is why successful methods for the restoration of a healthy hair look are now available to us at Park-Klinik Birkenwerder/Berlin.
Approx. 60 percent of men and 20 percent of women are affected by congenital hair loss. This change in hair volume can represent an enormous personal strain for the person affected.
In men, intermittent or subtle hair loss may already start around the age of 20, if it is congenital. Typical signs are a receding hairline or a tonsure. In the course of life, there is a continuous progression of hair loss.
In women, this process is in most cases subtle and it goes hand in hand with hormonal changes. Typical areas for hair loss are the crown of the head and the anterior temporal region.
Hair loss can be due to diseases of the scalp, but it can also be a consequence of operations, accidents, chemical burns after hair colouring or general burns. In a personal consultation, a therapeutic plan is drawn up for the respective indication.
Please do not hesitate to contact us for a personal consultation. Our surgeons will review, explain in detail, and discuss your options regarding »hair transplantation« at Park-Klinik Birkenwerder/Berlin.
What are the different methods of hair transplantation?
There are two main ways in which donor hair grafts are extracted today: the so-called FUT and FUE methods.
FUT (Follicle Unit Transplantation) also called STRIP-harvesting technique
In a gentle procedure, a strip of skin is harvested from the posterior scalp. The defect caused is closed by a special suture that allows hair to grow through the scar and thus does not compromise the hairdo. The resulting scar is hardly visible. Individual hair follicles are extracted from the strip under microscope out of which approx. 99% intact hair roots can be harvested.
This removal technique takes approx. 30 minutes at Park-Klinik Birkenwerder/Berlin and is done under local anaesthesia.
FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction)
Here, no strip is harvested but individual hair follicles are removed from the scalp through tiny punches. Their vitality is examined under the microscope and they are then transplanted individually. For this type of extraction, the hair at the back of the head needs to be shortened to 3mm. The extraction is done under local anaesthesia and takes several hours.
Approx. 80 to 90 percent of follicles harvested are alive and viable.
While trained staff removes the so-called grafts (follicular units containing 1-3 hair roots) from the strip, the doctor punctures the sites that are to receive the grafts in the target region. These tiny slits are approx. 1mm long and are set at an angle in line with natural hair growth. This is important to achieve a harmonious hair look and a discreet overall picture.
Once the area that is to receive the grafts has been prepared, all grafts are harvested (between 1000 to 4000 grafts as the case may be) and are inserted follicle by follicle. This treatment step takes 4-6 hours and is also done under local anaesthesia.
The hair transplantation procedure
Hair transplantation at Park-Klinik Birkenwerder/Berlin is performed as in-office procedure and under local anaesthesia. Depending on the number of follicles to be transplanted, this procedure takes 4 to 6 hours. For the patient’s benefit, breaks are taken during which we offer you something to eat and to drink.
Important information – after hair transplantation
There is no special dressing that needs to be worn. Patients can start to wash their hair two days after surgery. It is important to know that the transplanted hair falls out from its root after transplantation and that the root enters into a non-productive phase. After 100 days, the root starts to produce a new hair that will last.
